1.1 Concept

Neon City is the final work for the stylised city scene project. My inspiration comes from Cyberpunk's Night City but also from South East Asian capitals such as Bangkok and Kuala-Lumpur. I aimed to build a small, atmospheric city scene within a short period of time.

1.2 Techniques

I made a few simple building by bevelling, and adding loop-cuts and some small details as necessary. This served the basis for the particle system built on a plane set to Hair. By adjusting the Emission settings a small city can be rather quickly populated.(1.2.1) To ensure a diverse scene more building variants were added and rotation, scale and position randomisation were implemented within the Particle System. I added image texture nodes in order to create a more realistic look. The neon lights were added by increasing colour emission on certain parts of the skyscrapers. I placed multiple spotlights and increasing their strengths to make reflector-like lightbeams.(1.2.2)

1.3 Alternative Perspective

Originally I intended to make a scene from a different view point looking out to an avenue from one of the lower levels of a building. But just as in photography I like to experiment with various perspectives. An alternative angle can produce dramatic effects. By placing the camera on ground level looking upwards the overshadowing size of skyscrapers easily muliplied. Finally I had another idea to change the camera lens type to panoramic for a wider viewing angle and the Panorama Type to Fisheye Equisolid for a powerful end result.(1.3.1)
